Will I be "blacklisted" because of insurance fraud?
No, committing insurance fraud does not put you on an insurance blacklist. In fact, no such blacklist exists. However, you may be registered with the CIS Foundation. Colloquially, the CIS Foundation’s database is often referred to as the “blacklist.” We’ll explain why insurance fraud can land you on the “blacklist” and how you can still get insurance.
'Blacklist' or CIS registration for insurance fraud?
In the case of insurance fraud, you won’t be placed on a so-called blacklist, but you will be registered in the CIS Foundation’s database. CIS stands for Stichting Centraal Informatie Systeem (Central Information System Foundation). They store all insurance data that is important to share. You will be registered in the CIS database in cases of insurance fraud, among other things, but also if you have had your driver’s license revoked or caused damage while driving an uninsured vehicle. Insurers and authorized representatives can enter this data into the national database. The purpose of the database is to make potential risks manageable for insurers and to prevent fraud as much as possible.
Insurers can check the CIS database to see if you are listed and why. Are you listed for insurance fraud? If so, there is a good chance they will deny your insurance application. You would then pose too great a risk to the insurer.
How long does a CIS registration for insurance fraud last?
Insurance fraud is not taken lightly by insurers. By committing insurance fraud, you betray the bond of trust between you and your insurer. Individuals who have committed fraud pose a significant risk to insurance companies. To protect others from this, a record of insurance fraud remains on file for a long time—longer than any other CIS record. A record of insurance fraud remains on file for approximately 8 years. During these 8 years, the report is visible to every affiliated insurer in the CIS database.
Are you registered with the CIS Foundation for insurance fraud? You can submit a request to view your file. You will then be shown an exact copy of the registration. You will see who registered you and why. You can send a written request by mail, along with a copy of your ID. If you wish to purchase insurance through Alpina, we unfortunately cannot request this information on your behalf. Due to privacy laws, insurers are not permitted to provide us with information regarding the contents of your CIS registration.
