All about insurance with a driving disqualification
Have you been issued a driving disqualification? If so, this can have unpleasant consequences for your motor insurance policies, such as auto insurance. There are many different reasons why you can get a driving disqualification, such as for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. We explain when you may be issued a driving disqualification and how you can still get insurance with a driving disqualification.
When do you get a driving disqualification?
A driving disqualification means that you are not allowed to drive a motor vehicle for a certain period of time. A driving disqualification is not only valid for a car, but for all motorized vehicles. You can get a driving disqualification if you:
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Driving more than 50 kilometres per hour too fast
- Causing danger or nuisance on the road
- Driving an uninsured car
- Driving while disqualified or with an invalid driving licence
- Driving on after causing an accident
The police, a public prosecutor or a judge can impose a driving disqualification on you. This driving disqualification can be for a few days, a few weeks, a few months or sometimes even for a number of years.
Driving disqualification Germany
Suppose you commit a serious traffic offence in Germany and are subsequently banned from driving. Penalties such as a driving disqualification only apply in the country in which the offence was committed. So if you get a driving disqualification in Germany you are allowed to drive in the Netherlands. However, in Germany you are not allowed to drive a motor vehicle, not even to drive back to the Netherlands. For a driving disqualification or another traffic offence in Germany, no points are added to the Dutch beginner's driving licence or points driving licence.
Alcohol driving disqualification
If you go on the road under the influence of alcohol, you can cause major damage. Not only to your own vehicle or yourself, but also to others or other people's property. If you are caught with too much alcohol on you will get a driving ban. Are you driving under the influence of alcohol causing damage? Then your insurer may not pay for the damage and may even cancel your insurance. An insurer may have an alcohol clause. An alcohol clause means that the insurer will reimburse the other party for damages, but you must then pay these costs back to your insurer.
Driving disqualification car insurance
A driving disqualification can have major consequences for your auto insurance. Insurers have the right to terminate insurance at the time you get a driving disqualification. Also, getting a new car insurance policy will cause problems. Chances are that a regular insurance company will not want to accept you. They see you as an increased risk, even if your driving disqualification has already ended. Chances are that you can only get car insurance from De Vereende. De Vereende specializes in insuring special risks, such as a driving disqualification.
Driving disqualification driving without a licence
Driving without a licence is not normally a crime. Driving without a VALID driving licence, on the other hand, is a criminal offence. Getting into a car without a valid driving licence can result in a driving disqualification if you are caught. In addition, you are not insured in this case. Do you cause damage while driving a vehicle without a valid driving licence? Then all costs are for your own account. Damage to a motor vehicle can be substantial, even if you only hit a pole.
Driving disqualification insurance registration
The Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management has approved the registration of driving disqualifications in the CIS database. It is important for motor vehicle insurers to know whether an insured's driving licence has been (temporarily) withdrawn. The data of driving disqualifications are provided by the Public Prosecutor's Office after the person concerned has been sentenced to a driving disqualification by a judge. A driving disqualification remains registered for 5 years at Stichting CIS.
Taking out insurance after driving disqualification
If you have had a driving disqualification in the past, few regular insurance companies will accept you. However, there are some companies that may make an exception, but this depends on :
- The duration of the driving disqualification
- The date of the driving disqualification
- The reason for the driving disqualification
At Geennee.nl we will initially try to place you with a regular insurer at normal rates. Is this not possible? Then we can always accommodate you with De Vereende. Because De Vereende specializes in special damages and risks, they can also cover persons with a driving ban, a criminal record or a registration as a defaulter.
