What can I do if I am refused car insurance?

Have you been refused car insurance? This can have several causes. Luckily, every insurer uses different criteria when accepting an insurance. When one insurer refuses your application for car insurance, it does not mean that the other one automatically does as well. Here you can read for which reasons your car insurance could be refused and how you can get car insurance after all!

Top 10 reasons why your car insurance is refused

There are various reasons why an insurer may refuse your application for car insurance. Here are the 10 most important reasons.

1. Young driver with a fast car

Do you have a relatively new driving licence and do you want to insure a fast car? Chances are that your car insurance will be refused. Young drivers are seen as a risk group anyway . Statistics show that young drivers on average cause more damage than older drivers. This is mainly due to the limited driving experience. Therefore, insurers often consider a young driver with a sporty, fast car to be too big a risk. Therefore, before you buy a car, always check whether you can insure it.

2. Too many claims

All insurers can see in the national database Roy Data how often you have submitted a claim. They look especially at claims where legal assistance is important, such as theft or window damage. If you have often submitted a claim, they assume that you will do so again in the future. This is a reason for the insurer to refuse your application for car insurance.

3. Default

It may happen that you are late in paying your insurance premium. In that case, you will not immediately receive a CIS registration. Your insurer will first send you a warning, after which you can still pay the premium. However, when you structurally fail to pay the premium, there is a chance that your insurer will stop the insurance. The insurer will then report this to the CIS Foundation. This information is then visible to all insurers. There is a big chance then that you will no longer be able to take out a car insurance with any insurer.

4. Driving disqualification

A driving disqualification means that you are not allowed to drive a motor vehicle for a certain period of time. You can get a driving disqualification in different situations, for example for driving under influence, driving after an accident, speeding more than 50 km/h or for driving with a driving disqualification or an invalid driving license. Even when your driving disqualification has been lifted, your car insurance may be refused.

5. A criminal record

If you have a criminal record , you are more likely to be refused car insurance, even if your criminal record has nothing to do with your driving. Insurers often see someone with a criminal record as an increased moral hazard. They assume that someone with a criminal record is less likely to follow insurance rules. As a result, the risk of damage is too high for them.

6. The car has been uninsured for too long

You are legally obliged to take out at least a third-party insurance for your car, as soon as it is registered in your name. The car must be insured even if you do not drive it. If your car has been uninsured for longer than 14 days, it is possible that your car insurance will be refused as soon as you apply for it. Many insurance companies do not want to insure a car that should have been insured a long time ago.

7. Fraud

If you have committed insurance fraud, this will be registered in the database of the CIS Foundation. With the word fraud, people often think of serious crimes, but it can also be about withholding information during the insurance application. If you withhold information from the insurer and the insurer finds out, your insurance will be terminated immediately or refused.

8. Car is not sufficiently secured

Cars are always a popular target for thieves. However, some makes or models of cars are especially prone to theft, for example because they are very expensive. Therefore, it is important that you secure these cars extra with, for example, a good alarm system or an immobiliser. If this security is not according to the requirements of your insurer, this is a reason for them to refuse your car insurance.

9. Refusal on the basis of age

When calculating the premium, an insurer also looks at the applicant's age. For example, very young drivers pay a lot more for car insurance, because research has shown that they cause damage more quickly. However, it is also possible that a car insurance will be refused if the risk is too high for the insurer. This is the case with very young drivers, but also with older drivers.

10. Incorrect CIS registration

Has your car insurance been refused, but do you suspect that the CIS registration is incorrect? You can submit a request to Stichting CIS to view your registration. If the registration is incorrect, you can submit a request for correction.
