Taking out insurance with a criminal record: is it possible?

Getting insurance with a criminal record isn’t always easy. Not every insurer will accept your application, and even when they do, there are often certain conditions attached. What if your application is rejected? In that case, you can always get insurance from De Vereende. However, they also have a number of requirements before they’ll accept your application.

With a criminal record, can I still get insurance from a regular insurance company?

There is always a chance that a standard insurance company will accept your insurance application. This depends on the type of offense committed and how long ago it occurred. You can easily compare different insurers using our comparison tool. Choose the insurance plan that best suits your needs and then follow all the steps. Fill in all fields truthfully and then see if your application is accepted. If not, you can use our website to calculate an estimate of your premium with De Vereende. Through Alpina, you can always purchase insurance, even with a criminal record.

Why do insurers impose requirements when buying insurance?

An insurer is not required to accept your application, with the exception of health insurers. You can always purchase basic health insurance coverage. However, supplemental insurance is often not available. If an insurer believes you pose too great a risk, they may reject your application. In doing so, they primarily consider the moral risk. For someone with a criminal record, the moral risk is often assessed as higher. The assumption here is that someone with a criminal record is less likely to adhere strictly to insurance rules or pay the premium.

The insurer may also choose to accept insurance only under certain conditions. Some conditions may include:

  • The insurer does not cover certain risks
  • The policy terms remain the same, but you will pay a higher premium
  • Both the policy terms and the premium remain the same, but your deductible is higher
  • There are certain requirements for eligibility for coverage, such as fire safety

Acceptance requirements at Vereende

De Vereende specializes in insuring special risks. Therefore, they themselves run a greater risk than regular insurance companies. To keep that risk manageable, they have set a number of underwriting requirements for taking out insurance:

  • You usually pay three months' insurance premium in advance
  • The insurance does not take effect until the insurer receives a fully completed application
  • The insurance coverage does not take effect until you have paid the first premium
  • You’ll usually have to pay a security deposit as well. Vereende can use this security deposit to offset any unpaid premiums if you’re late with a payment, or to cover part of the cost of damage you’ve caused.
