What can I do if I have been denied auto insurance?
Have you been denied car insurance? There could be several reasons for this. Fortunately, every insurer uses different criteria when accepting insurance applications. If one insurer rejects your application for car insurance, that doesn’t mean another one will automatically do the same. Here, you can read about the reasons your car insurance might have been denied and how you can still get car insurance after being denied!
CIS registration
First things first. Insurance companies conduct risk assessments. They look at various factors in your (insurance) history to determine how likely you are to file a claim or fail to pay your premium on time. The higher the risk, the higher your premium. An insurer will only reject your application if the risk is truly high.
To assess the level of risk, insurers always check whether you are listed in the CIS Foundationdatabase. CIS stands for Central Information System. The CIS Foundation maintains records of all key insurance data, such as the number of claims or instances of fraud.
Rejected? Get car insurance through Alpina!
Has your application for car insurance been denied? Through Alpina, you can always get car insurance. Of course, we prefer to place you with a standard insurance company. If that really isn’t possible, you can always get car insurance through us with the insurance company De Vereende. De Vereende was established specifically to handle special cases in the insurance sector. However, De Vereende does charge additional costs for taking out car insurance, such as a higher premium. This is to compensate for the higher risk they face. With us, you can easily calculate an estimate of the premium for your car insurance with De Vereende.
Top 10 reasons why your car insurance is denied
1. Young driver with a fast car
Have you had your driver’s license for only a short time and want to insure a fast car? There’s a good chance your car insurance application will be denied. Young drivers are generally considered a high-risk group. Statistics show that, on average, young drivers are more likely to cause accidents than older drivers. This is mainly attributed to their limited driving experience. That’s why insurers often view a young driver with a sporty, fast car as too much of a risk. So, before you buy a car, always check whether you can actually insure it.
2. Too many claims claimed
All insurers can check the nationalRoy Data database to see how often you’ve filed a claim. They focus primarily on claims that require legal assistance, such as theft or windshield damage. If you have filed a claim frequently, they assume you will do so again in the future. This is a reason for the insurer to deny your application for auto insurance.
3. Default
Of course, there may be times when you’re late in paying your insurance premium. This won’t result in an immediate CIS registration. Your insurer will first send you a warning, after which you can still pay the premium. However, if you consistently fail to pay the premium, there’s a chance your insurer will cancel your policy. The insurer will then report this to Stichting CIS. This information will then be visible to all insurers. There is a high chance that you will no longer be able to purchase car insurance from any insurer.
4. A driving disqualification
If you have had your license suspended, this means you are prohibited from driving a motor vehicle for a certain period of time. You can have your license suspended in various situations, such as for driving under the influence, fleeing the scene of an accident, speeding by more than 50 kilometers per hour, or driving while your license is suspended or invalid. Even after your driving suspension has been lifted, your car insurance application may still be denied.
5. A criminal record
If you havea criminal record, you are more likely to be denied car insurance, even if your criminal record has nothing to do with your driving behavior. Insurers often view someone with a criminal record as a higher moral risk. They assume that someone with a criminal record is less likely to strictly adhere to insurance rules. As a result, the risk of claims is too high for them.
6. The car has been uninsured in your name for too long
You are legally required to have at least liability insurance for your car as soon as it is registered in your name. Even if you don’t drive the car, it must still be insured. If your car remains uninsured and registered in your name for more than 14 days, your application for car insurance may be denied when you apply. This is because many insurance companies are unwilling to insure a car that should have been insured long ago.
7. Fraud
If you have committed insurance fraud, this will be recorded in the CIS Foundation’s database. People often associate the word “fraud” with serious crimes, but it can also refer to withholding information during the insurance application process. If you withhold information from the insurer and the insurer discovers this, your insurance policy will be immediately terminated or denied.
8. Car is inadequately secured
Cars are always a popular target for thieves. However, certain makes or models of cars are particularly vulnerable to theft, for example because they are very expensive. That is why it is important to provide these cars with extra security, such as a good alarm system or an immobilizer. If this security does not meet your insurer’s requirements, it may be grounds for them to deny your car insurance.
9. Refusal based on age
When calculating the premium, an insurer also looks at the age of the applicant. For example, very young drivers pay a lot more premium for car insurance because research has shown that they cause damage faster. However, car insurance may also be refused if the risk is too great for the insurer. This is with very young drivers, but also with older drivers.
10. Incorrect CIS registration.
If your car insurance application is denied, but you suspect that your CIS registration is incorrect, you can submit a request to the CIS Foundation to review your registration. If the registration is incorrect, you can submit a request for correction.
