Why report insurance fraud?
Reporting insurance fraud is difficult, especially if it is only suspicion. Nevertheless, it is always wise to report a suspicion. What many people do not realize is that they themselves bear the brunt of insurance fraud. Indeed, the more fraud is committed, the more insurance premiums rise. So it is often the honest consumer who helps pay for insurance fraud. We explain here where you can report insurance fraud.
Where can I report insurance fraud?
You can report insurance fraud to the Insurance Crime Control Center (CBV) of the Dutch Association of Insurers. The CBV was established specifically to help insurers combat insurance crime. Not only insurance fraud, but also cybercrime, extortion, blackmail, money laundering or corruption among staff and business associates.
If you prefer not to make the report in person, you can also do so anonymously. You do not have to give your name and remain anonymous. You can report insurance fraud by sending an e-mail to [email protected] or by calling 070-333 85 00.
What types of insurance fraud can I report?
You can report all types of insurance fraud. There are also some forms that you may not immediately recognize as insurance fraud, so we will briefly explain them below:
Insurance fraud when applying for insurance
Knowingly lying or concealing information on an insurance application is a form of insurance fraud. For example, by not answering the insurer's underwriting questions honestly. You will often be asked if your insurance has ever been cancelled or denied by an insurer, if you have ever been disqualified from driving, and if you have a criminal history. The insurer expects you to answer truthfully. Therefore, if you do not, you are committing insurance fraud.
Claiming more damages than actually suffered
Communicating false facts to the insurer. For example, exaggerating the actual damage or number of items stolen so that the insurer pays a higher claim. Insurers call this opportunistic fraudsters. People who take advantage of the situation to benefit themselves. For example, if their home has been broken into, they claim an extra laptop, iPad or expensive television they didn't own at all.
Pretending injury or distorting facts
Sometimes there are damages that are not within the insurance coverage. For example, if someone has windshield damage to the car, but is only WA-insured. To be reimbursed for windshield damage, you must have a third-party limited liability car insurance policy. By quickly adjusting insurance coverage and only then claiming the damage, someone is still trying to get compensation. Also, items that are lost or broken are often reported stolen.
Intentionally causing damage
Intentionally causing damage, such as by staging a collision or burglary. An insurer must then be able to prove that it really is insurance fraud. Not an easy task. That's why when they suspect fraud, they always launch an investigation.
