Why report insurance fraud?
Reporting insurance fraud can be difficult, especially when it’s just a suspicion. Still, it’s always wise to report any suspicions. What many people don’t realize is that they themselves are the ones who end up paying the price for insurance fraud. The fact is, the more fraud that’s committed, the more insurance premiums rise. So it’s often the honest consumer who ends up helping to pay for insurance fraud. Here, we explain where you can report insurance fraud.
Where can I report insurance fraud?
You can report insurance fraud to the Center for Combating Insurance Crime(CBV) of the Dutch Association of Insurers. The CBV was established specifically to help insurers combat insurance crime. This includes not only insurance fraud, but also cybercrime, extortion, blackmail, money laundering, and corruption among staff and business associates.
If you’d rather not report it in person, you can also do so anonymously. You won’t have to give your name and will remain anonymous. You can report insurance fraud by sending an email to [email protected]or by calling 070-333 85 00.
What types of insurance fraud can I report?
You can report all types of insurance fraud. There are also a number of forms that you might not immediately recognize as insurance fraud, so we’ll explain them below:
Insurance fraud when applying for insurance
Deliberately lying or withholding information on an insurance application constitutes insurance fraud. For example, by not answering the insurer’s underwriting questions honestly. You are often asked whether your insurance has ever been canceled or declined by an insurer, whether you have ever had your driver’s license revoked, and whether you have a criminal record. The insurer expects you to answer truthfully. If you do not, you are committing insurance fraud.
Claiming more damages than actually suffered
Providing false information to the insurer. For example, by exaggerating the actual damage or the number of items stolen, so that the insurer pays out a higher claim. Insurers refer to these as opportunistic fraudsters. People who take advantage of the situation to benefit themselves. For example, if their home has been burglarized, they might claim an extra laptop, iPad, or expensive television that they didn’t actually own.

Pretending injury or distorting facts
Sometimes there are damages that are not within the insurance coverage. For example, if someone has windshield damage to the car, but is only WA-insured. To be reimbursed for windshield damage, you must have a third-party limited liability car insurance policy. By quickly adjusting insurance coverage and only then claiming the damage, someone is still trying to get compensation. Also, items that are lost or broken are often reported stolen.
Intentionally causing damage
Intentionally causing damage, such as by staging a collision or burglary. An insurer must then be able to prove that it really is insurance fraud. Not an easy task. That's why when they suspect fraud, they always launch an investigation.
