What coverage can I take out?

When taking out motorcycle insurance, you can choose from three different coverage options: Liability, Liability + Limited Comprehensive, and All-Risk. The most comprehensive coverage is All-Risk coverage. With this coverage, the insurer will, for example, also pay for your own damage in the event of an accident caused by you. You can also file a claim with the insurer in the event of fire or theft of the motorcycle. With Third-Party Liability and Limited Comprehensive coverage , the insurer also pays out in the event of fire and theft, as well as a number of other causes of damage. Coverage against theft is particularly important, as the risk of theft is high for motorcycles. The most limited coverage, third-party liability motorcycle insurance, only covers damage you cause to others. Damage to your own motorcycle is therefore never covered under this policy.

Consequences of riding a motorcycle without motorcycle insurance

Of course, you’re not allowed to ride your motorcycle without a driver’s license. If you don’t have a driver’s license yet but decide to ride your motorcycle anyway, this can have serious consequences, because it’s not only dangerous but also a criminal offense. Furthermore, motorcycle insurance does not provide coverage if you ride a motorcycle while you do not yet have a driver’s license. This means you will be responsible for the costs yourself if you cause an accident. This applies to both the costs of your own damage and damage to another party. The insurer will compensate the other party for the damage but will then seek reimbursement from you. This means you will still be responsible for the costs yourself.  Is someone else riding your motorcycle who does have a driver’s license? In that case, the insurance will cover the damage incurred.
